Levels of Editing

Not every document or client requires the same kind or even amount of editing. Sometimes, the level of editing is dictated by the amount of work the document needs. Sometimes, budget or time constraints interfere. I will work with you to decide what your particular situation calls for.
Note – though I will point out any facts that don’t seem right to me, I’m not a fact checker. That is a separate specialization, and if your document relies heavily on factual accuracy, you may want to hire someone specially trained in fact checking.

Light Copyedit

I will ensure consistency throughout the document and conformity with the chosen style. I will also correct mechanical errors in grammar and punctuation. Other problem areas, such as awkward phrasing, obvious factual inconsistencies, terms and ideas needing clarification, and wordy or convoluted passages, I will point out for the author to correct.

A good option for a reasonably clean manuscript that just needs a bit of polishing.

Medium to Heavy Copyedit

I will perform all of the services of a light copyedit, with the addition of some revision of any phrasing issues, as well as offering recommendations on how to resolve some of the problem areas. This service incorporates some elements of substantive/line editing.

For those authors who have their ideas and message all mapped out but just need a little more help making sure they're communicating clearly with their readers.

Manuscript Evaluation

I will read through either a portion of or the full manuscript and offer suggestions and recommendations for large-scale issues and improvements.

For authors who need a bit more developmental help on their manuscripts.

Sample Copyedit

I will do a mini-edit of about 1,000 words selected from the middle of the manuscript. If you decide to proceed with an edit of the full document, the fee paid for the sample edit will be applied to the final invoice.

A good option for authors who want to ensure that my editing style is a good fit before committing to a full edit of a larger project.
